Welcome to 4th Grade Math!
December: Equivalent Fraction Websites
August/September
Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. It has been an interesting start to the year between the solar eclipse and Hurricane Harvey! We are excited about working with, and getting to know, your children as the year progresses. On this page you will find information about what your students are currently learning, what the state standards are for the academic year, and homework information.

What Your Student Will Be Learning This Year:
- Here is a snapshot of all the things mathematically that your students will be learning through out the year. :)
What We Are Currently Learning:
- August:
- Discovering relationships in the place value system (place values to the left are ten times greater than those to the right; place values to the right are one-tenth of those to the left)
- Expressing whole number values in a variety of ways with a targeted focus on expanded notation (and dropping the "AND" out of whole numbers) to the billions place; Representing values of digits in a number up to the billions
- Rounding whole numbers to a given place value (up to the hundred thousands)
- Comparing and ordering whole numbers to the billions
- September: (we will also continue covering topics from August)
- Expressing decimal number values in a variety of ways with a targeted focus on expanded notation (emphasis of "AND" separating whole and fractional numbers) to the billions place; Representing values of digits in a number through the hundredths place value.
- Relating fractional and decimal values
- Comparing and ordering decimal numbers to the hundredths place
- Adding/Subtracting whole numbers and decimal numbers (through the hundredths) using the standard algorithm
- Using rounding and compatible numbers to estimate solutions involving addition and subtraction
- Problem solving with money
Throughout the year, we will work on
- Building numerical fluency (building numbers and breaking them apart; understanding all the pieces of a numeral that give it the whole value)
- Communicating mathematical thinking
- Having a growth mindset/building perseverance and tenacity
Homework:
- Students should expect to have about 25 minutes of math homework each night Monday-Thursday
- There are two components to the math homework:
- Problem Solving/Skill Practice (20 minutes)
- Math Fact Practice for Automaticity (5 minutes)
- For the first couple weeks, students will receive an assignment from the teacher to complete for both components. Starting mid September, the automaticity component will be done on the computer. (They are currently being taught in the classroom how to use the site successfully so that they are masters before it is required to do at home.)
That is all for now. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your math/science teacher, Ms. Pritchard or Mrs. See! Looking forward to the awesome year ahead!
